All About Our LiLi Zellige Tile Collection

The LiLi Zellige Collection is no copycat. Our team worked on sourcing and designing truly authentic Zellige tiles. The manufacturing process is steeped in tradition and Moroccan heritage, which we are pleased to honor in the production of our new collection. Let’s take a deeper look into what makes our Zellige tiles so unique.

The Process

At LiLi Tile, we take pride in honoring the age-old manufacturing process of Zellige tiles. This manufacturing process preserves the time-tested techniques passed down through generations of Moroccan artisans. This meticulous process begins with the selection of natural Moroccan clay, which is then hand-kneaded and left to air-dry under the Moroccan sun. 

The dried clay is then carefully cut into individual shapes and glazed by hand, resulting in a beautiful array of colors and finishes. The tiles are then fired in traditional kilns for 12-14 hours, a critical step that ensures their durability and unique appearance. After being fired in the kiln, the tiles are chipped and shaped by hand before being packaged and sent to our customers all over the world. It’s incredible to see our Zellige tiles being made.

Each step of this intricate process, from shaping to glazing to firing, is performed with the utmost care and respect for tradition, making every Zellige tile not just a piece of decor but a testament to the rich heritage of traditional Moroccan craftsmanship.

Zellige Colors 

One of the most exciting things about Zellige tiles is the range of color variations available. Zellige tiles are known to be bold and bright, but we also have neutral Zellige hues in our collection that are suitable for any space. Here are some of our favorite colors from the collection. 

Turmeric

This bright, bold yellow tile will surely bring rays of Moroccan sunshine into your home. Our Turmeric tiles are perfect for creating lively and vibrant spaces that reflect the warm yellow hues of ground turmeric.

Arabian Night

The Shapes and Sizes

Our Zellige color variations are available in three sizes: 2x2 Mosaic, 2x6 Bejmat, and 4x4 Square.

2x2 Mosaic

Our 2x2 Mosaic format is reminiscent of traditional mosaics in Moroccan culture. Because each handmade Zellige tile looks slightly different, these mosaics have a range of monochromatic shades, textures, and sizes within the 2x2 format. 

2x6 Bejmat 

Bejmat tiles are typically thicker and more uniform than traditional Zellige tiles. Enjoy this elongated tile design for your next linear installation. Utilize this tile for your next kitchen backsplash, shower, or accent wall. 

4x4 Square

We’re taking it back to our roots with our 4x4 Square tile. This traditional square tile is reminiscent of the size and shape of many of our LiLi cement tiles. Each 4x4 tile beautifully captures the character of Moroccan clay.

Installing Zellige tiles requires careful attention to detail to ensure their beauty, authenticity, and longevity. Begin by preparing a smooth, even surface and using a high-quality adhesive suitable for your specific climate and environment. Due to the handmade nature of our authentically made Zellige tiles, expect and embrace slight variations in size and shape. These inherent imperfections only contribute to the overall charm!
